Microwave synthesis is a well-accepted technique used by research facilities and major pharmaceutical and biotech companies worldwide. Microwave energy has been used for more than 20 years to accelerate synthetic reactions, which for the most part have been chemistries that could withstand higher temperatures (up to 280 °C). It is a very efficient means of driving reactions to completion, often resulting in higher yields and cleaner chemistries. Microwave energy has the additional advantage of being “instantly on/instantly off”. Because energy is applied directly to the reactants and not transferred through an intermediate system, once the microwave energy source is turned off, the application of energy stops, decreasing the possibility of unwanted side reactions.
